Human DNA Isolation
DNA isolation is a process of purification of DNA from
sample using a combination of physical and chemical methods. The first
isolation of DNA was done in 1869 by Friedrich Miescher. Currently it
is a routine procedure in Molecular Biology or Forensic analysis. In Hands-on “Human DNA
Isolation” students step into the role of a clinical molecular biologist
and use research-grade laboratory equipment to investigate DNA samples from
human blood samples. Students will analyze the isolated DNA using gel electrophoresis
and additional activities are included to reinforce learning about DNA.
Where can we exploit human DNA and its information?
1. In
whole genome sequencing
2. In DNA
foot printing (in Forensics)
3. In
identification of single nucleotide polymorphism
4. In
genetic Screening
5. In gene
Therapy
6. In
production of recombinant proteins and hormones
7. In
personalized medicine
Workshop Outline
1. Introduction
to Human DNA and isolation procedure
2. Isolation
of genomic DNA from blood
3. Analysis
of DNA on agarose gel electrophoresis
